CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Connor’s island was breathtaking, and the view made the seaplane’s bouncing take-off—and equally unsettling water landing—worth my tingling nerves. As we glided toward a wooden dock, a woman waited, wrapped in a heavy coat. The breeze was frigid, but behind her, the house rose majestically from the surrounding pine trees. Dark wood and glittering glass basked in sunlight that broke through the clouds. Soaring windows reminded me of a sailing vessel, or a cathedral, with the shimmer of chandeliers inside casting an inviting golden glow. Max carried my luggage, his hand guiding against my back as we reached the wide front step.

“This is Mrs. Graham.” It surprised me when Maxton unwound enough to wink at the older woman. Then I remembered the care he’d taken with Birdie and realized it was a private side of his personality he rarely revealed.

“Dr. St. Clair?” Mrs. Graham held out her hand in greeting. “Pleasure to have you with us.”

The soft burr of Scotland warmed her voice. She continued chatting as we entered the house. The furnishings were a mix of European and hunting-lodge influences that fit Connor perfectly. I imagined him here, relaxed, and I felt the tiny jolt of recognition. The house felt the way my grandfather’s house did, as if someone lovingly collected each item for the ambiance.

A river-rock fireplace dominated the great room. The fire burned cheerfully, and the warmth drew me. I admired the grouped club chairs, and the Aubusson carpet in ruby and cream. Small tables with brass lamps and eggshell shades. Pendant lights hung in other areas of the room, creating spaces for conversation or eating. A design for entertaining, even though I doubted large groups would gather here because of the location.

“Dr. St. Clair,” Maxton said as he pressed a palm to my back. “I’ll take you to your room, show you around.”

I nodded and dug into my purse to retrieve my phone. Alerts signaled missed calls and no available cell service. I powered off and let the phone disappear into my purse again. There wasn’t anyone I wanted to talk to, except the one person who would not be available to me for a week.

And even then, I wasn’t sure what we could say to each other.
